I would like to have anybody that wishes to have a goldfish, shubunkin / watergarden pond join in this conversation. Ask any and all questions of how to set up from easy to higher levels of filtering, bottom drains etc.

If anybody has a pond running and would like to post how well theirs is working and what they did to make it work well. Please post to help those working on their pond.

We all have different ponds, different levels of filtration, different levels of plumbing. Nothing is wrong for your setup. The goal is good water for the fish you keep.

This is looking through 20 feet of water (about) the bog water fall is on the far side, along with some floating plants, The liner looks like a rock wall.

Just an example of clear water in a water garden.

There is a little stuff on the camera lens, need to pull it and clean, fun to watch the fish come and clean it off........lol and it is a cloudy foggy day today

my shubunkin pond when I first built it.

and now....

3.5-4 feet deep, 5.5x3.5 in size, around 400-450 gallons in total. Bottom drain to settlement chamber with ANswer 250, fluid bed and a small pressure filter acting as a fines filter. 18 watt UV. I have had 5 shubunkins and ryukin in it in the 8-16" range with no issues, and at one point had 25 baby ryukin in there raising them to 6" with no issues whatsoever.

Very nice. With kids the fencing is great, bet it keeps out walk up herons too. But I do see netting over your pond. Really pretty and large fish you have.

I'm separating my goldies/shubs from my Koi this winter. I pulled my goldies/shubs and put them in a tank earlier this week. I started with 2 goldies and 3 shubs and now have about 20 (damn rabbits). We're planning on putting in a goldie/shub pond in addition to my Koi pond over the winter so that I can enjoy them without them taking over the Koi pond. I'll put my lilies in the goldie/shub pond because everyone keeps telling me that the Koi will tear them up. I'm thinking of going about 18-24" deep with the "water garden" and expanding and deepening my Koi pond to 54" throughout the winter so that they're both finished before my family comes in for my daughter's graduation in May.

My plants have done great with the fish, (no koi). Post some pictures as you go with your non koi pond. Mine goes from a foot (very small area) to 3 feet that is where I have the lilies, then it goes down to 5, that area I have some floaters ow no plants.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

My wife read your bog thread and wanted a bog. Now she thinks she wants a goldfish pond. I'm thinking that I would like to get back to working on my pond, but oh, well... at least she's interested.

Laughing glad I can inspire someone. I love my bog, it keeps my pond perfect and love the plants that grow in it. Goldie and shubie ponds are so easy with just a little planning.

I may have missed the obvious, but is there a link to this bog thread?

Thanks! Found it and read it! Beautiful implementation, but wow -- that has been a lot of work!

There is absolutely no chance of my wife buying me a tractor, however, so all my digging will have to continue by hand.....darn.....

It took me all of last summer, than this summer I have not been working on it much, needed my hands to heal, hauling all those rocks up that slope damaged them a little. They are lots better now.

We can not even plant a bush without a digging bar. This pond would never have been created without the tractor.

Lots of rock with just a little bit of soil.

We both really enjoy it, even with our slope. That was a real learning curve building a pond on a slope. The pond looks far away in the pictures, but it isn't we can stand in the window and watch the fish.
