Picked up a 1000 gallon stock tank, cheap, and decided to redo a very rocky flower garden in the front of our house.

Of course another slope.

The rocks around the pond are just a few that I dug out while making the hole.

And of course that dirt slope must of had poison ivy roots in it, did not see any plants. Back, legs, arm and hands all broken out. Darn been so careful this year, first time to get it.

So before I cover the back slope dirt area, I need to drain the pond so I can walk in it to place the rocks or what ever we use. Can't walk the edge and get this darn poison ivy again.

Still have mulching to do, just tossed some hay around the plants, need to put lily's in the pond and next summer some goldies to control the mosquitoes.

That will make a good lily pond. Sorry about the poison ivy. My Mom used to get it just by walking thru smoke of burned ivy plants.

Laughing, that is what my honey says also. I am scanning the yard to see where to put in the 300 gallon stock tank that came with the 1000. Since we are so acidic I want to try a pitcher plant bog.

That is really pretty!

Wally World sells a large blue tube of something, I think it's called Ivy Wash, for $10.00. It's much cheaper than the name brand stuff for $30 for a little tube. It stops it from spreading and helps with the itching. It has some type of sand in it so it feels wonderful while you're scrubbing it. LOL

I believe (hopefully - think -possibly) I have just completed a rework of my whole pond/stream system and am very satisfied with it. I may have found a way to scratch my itch – to build that is. Think maybe I have talked my local nursery man into keeping fish and water plants. Wouldn’t be a job as such, just trade out – doing the things I love:happy: in exchange for plants, garden stuff and maybe encouraging ponding in our local area. GETTING MY HANDS IN GOOD CLEAN DIRT:smiley-happy:

Addy my gosh you just did this??? And you found and planted flowers and everything already??? You are too much, girl!! How deep is the stock tank? Wow, 1000 gallons. Man. I'd sure love to run onto something like that cheap. Sorry about the poison. That stinks.

I'd say to give yourself a pat on the back but you don't need to be spreading that poisoon ivy around! eeeeck! feeling for you!

Thanks all. The lily pond took a day to dig, filled it with water and the one edge sank way down, so dug it out again, releveled. I used that rock on a roll cut into small strips and glued it to the edge to hide the blue tank. Also sprayed it with metallic brown paint on the outside edge.

The tank is 9 feet wide, 2.4 feet deep peppy

Our nurseries here are having their winter is coming sales, 50-80% off, my honey said to go and get a truck load and I did ...........lol. It took a day to dig out the rocks and find enough decent soil to put the plants in, would not have been able to do with without the tractor, it even struggled with the rocks. Also used bags of garden soil. Getting the plants in now, they have a chance to grow some nice roots then really take off in the spring, some are evergreens also.

Now just have 300 bulbs to stick in the ground, already planted over 200, nice sales on them too! Just call me crazy.

The dugout rocks went around the front edges, still have a pile to place. I think I am going to get stacking wall stone for the back edge like I did with the big pond. But there is no way I will be walking the edge in the back ever again. I am covered with poison ivy break out right now. Darn roots. Never saw a plant and I really watch out for them.

Kntry, thanks for the info on the ivy wash. I have some technu I use, if I had been thinking of ivy I would have washed with it, it takes the oil off your skin so you don't break out. But you have to use it within 2 hours of contact with the plant. I will head to wally world tomorrow and get some ivy wash.

That's going to look nice. But as low as it is, won't mud wash in to it from the bank in a heavy rain?

The first picture of it in the dirt, it does look low, but that was before I moved dirt around for drainage, even then the edge was above ground level. I took that shot from the kitchen window, think it might be the angle, that makes it look below ground.

The edge of the tank is 3 inches above ground level, that back bank is mainly roots and rocks. The front and sides I have the ground sloped away from it for drainage. It just doesn't look that way with the rocks, plants and straw.

ROCK ON A ROLL!!!

Oops, hit post by mistake.

I never heard of ROCK ON A ROLL but have been looking for something like that for ages and ages. I wonder how that would work glued onto the liner around the edge of my pond? Man. Gotta get me some of that.

Addy, you're very industrious and a great source of all kinds of information and websites too!

Here you go peppy, it is not cheap but not real expensive either. I cut it to the size I need (little pieces) to have more to use.

It does work great, I will have some places in the big pond / stream that I will use it to cover liner that is vertical. I am fussy, hate the sight of black liner.

I've actually seen rock on a roll personally, and it's pretty cool fool-the-eye tactic that is fully waterproof. I've seen people hide liner over the pond edge with it and it's a good impersonator.

Peppy use gloves, make sure you lay it in the sun before using, makes it a lot easier to handle. I used flash mate, on the edge, but not in the water, not sure if fish safe.

Scissors, cut it beautifully.

How come use gloves? I googled and found the site last night. Thanks Addy. I can't beLIEVE this is the first I've seen this stuff! And I was thinking of PLing tile next year to hide the liner. Ha! I'll just use rock-on-a-roll! Personally, I think it's reasonably priced depending on what you're using it for--like how much you plan to use. Oh man! I'm thinking of all the things I can use it for. I'm so excited about this stuff I can't even TELL you!!

It is rough textured, tends to tear your hands a little if you are not careful. So glad I could help you out! And it does look great, like rock. It is lining the edge of the bog wall where it sticks above the water level of the pond.

I cut it into little pieces to make it look more like pieces of rock. Did not like the look on that wall of a solid strip.

That looks a heck of a lot better than my bare liner looks. And what a great substitute for rocks in a waterfall stream. People use it for that I guess? I looked at the pictures but they don't say what's real and what's rock-on-a-roll. Guess it's a good thing that you can't tell.

I love your fence with the tree and grassy area behind and then the woods. That looks so peaceful. Do you have livestock? I see a gate.

We have about 1.5 acres of untouched woods, our fence is somewhere back there. The deer bed down in the woods, when walking missy in the field, I see them take off through the trees. My honey promises this winter we will take our tractor and make a path. The poison ivy has kept me out of the woods, driving me crazy not to be able to walk back there. We could have critters, have a fence between the house and the back property which is totally fenced. A critter barn / shed, needs a new roof. But at this time no critters. We travel a lot taking care of his parents and honey loves to cruise. My lil yorkie is enough work right now lol. Her favorite resting place, honey's knee. http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab168/missyjosey/DSC00598.jpg ( Peppy, I have always wanted to have a horse! since childhood, wanted a arabian/quarter horse mix)

That's what my horse is, according to many knowledgable opinions since she lacks papers. I've had registered quarter horses, thoroughbreds off the track, a registered Tenessee Walker, some others and ponies too, but she was my first riding horse (very first horse was a stud colt) and last riding horse. She's like a comfortable old chair and we've had her for over 20 years now. I ran that poor girl all over the ridge daily at first in every kind of weather, rain, snow, sleet--with nothing but my eyeballs sticking out in the worst of it, LOL. Finally, after all these years, I'm rode out and she probably is too. Mostly, she stands around and eats but she paid her dues.

She does tricks and a few dressage moves I taught her. She's no dummy.

We're on 9 acres and the last house before a 2 1/2 mile stretch of dirt road. My youngest son followed a bear down the road the other week--to my dismay. We've had bear out here for the 21 years we've lived here but I've never actually seen one; just tracks.

We used to live a quarter mile the other way and owned 37 acres this way. Get this. It wasn't even fenced in and every day I let the horses out. They'd run down the road and graze all day until I hollered and then they'd all run back home for supper. Man, those were the days. I used to take my youngest son all over the ridge when he was still in diapers--sitting in front of me in the saddle and he'd always fall asleep. Then he rode Peppy when he got big enough.

Good times. I miss them.

I wanted a horse growing up too and I'm glad I never got one then or I would have missed out on the newness of it all when I was old enough to really appreciate it.

Here's what I did to a tiny piece of wooded area between the horse fence and leech bed. You're very creative with landscaping, Addy. I can't imagine what you will do with your piece of woods. It tooks months to clear this small area of woods. I'm sure you'll put me to shame. I did it all by hand with a saw, pick axe and shovel. It looked like the woods in the background of these pictures. And there's one pic of my son building Flash's shed with her looking on from behind her moved-back fence that she wasn't happy about. I've added some things since. It will look better as the plants and shrubs grow. It gives her a change of scenery too:

Your Yorky is a sweetie pie! I'll be he just loves all the landscaping and pond and interesting things to sniff around and explore!

Very nice Peppy, you have made a nice place there, I am sure she is a happy horse.

Actually, believe it or not, the woods are going to be left alone, except for making a path into them, even that will be hard to keep open. When mowing I have to get as close to the edge as possible, the vines come back with a vengeance, and quickly try to take over the yard.
There is a large farm field behind our woods and some neighbors to the left, can just see their house when the leaves fall, far enough away not to be a bother. We also have a dry stream bed which is a neighborhood run off when it rains, somewhere down there.
Taking care of the land without trees is enough!

She loves to hunt, we take yard walks (they last almost an hour), where she has favorite places she goes to find the paths of voles, mice, always on the look out for rabbits and squirrels. She is pretty darn fast, did catch the tail feathers of a bird once.

Here is a closer pic of the rock on a roll, I cut 8 inch strips to go over the blue edge of the tank. Made them just long enough to go into the water a little way, and they are only on the top edge of the tank, the rocks and brown paint hide the outside edge of the tank. When I put it on I wrinkled it a little to make more texture and shadows. Where edges met I made sure to glue the two pieces together well so shadows would not show the straight edge. There is a edge just to the left of that piece of root. Algae will help hide the rest of the tank, once it starts to grow.

How much nicer than bare liner that looks! I can't wait for spring to try this stuff!
