These Coolaroo's are really nice.
There are alot of promising news in shading your pond.

Sun causes algea.yuk
Birds i.e. egrets, blue herons, can't see your fish.
Water stays cooler...........

Well, this has been my issue lately too. I have been pondering over an idea that my dental hygenist told me about. What she has done with her pond is take a section and put 2 x 4 's strips and then put a piece of vinyl lattice (painted with krylon a dark color to blend in) and stapled a shading fence to the top, then top with plants to make it look pretty. She said her fish love hiding out in that section. Plus, she said since they did that to their pond last summer they haven't lost any fish from the heron. The fish hide under there when it is hot too.
So, I just might be doing this very soon. What is your opionion about it???
This little set up is across your pond and the wood is hidden under your rocks.

I think those sails in blue look pretty cool.

3qtkidz, Not sure what you are describing? Is it like a partial
pergola over of a section of the pond?
If so, I can see that looking real nice,
especially if it extended over a small seating section as well.

It sounds like it is water level, since she put plants on it also, a small section of the pond covered up.

yeah, then Joann is right. It's a little pergola just for the fish to hide under. Neat idea.

It's like those wood canopy thingees that people put to sit under on a deck or patio. Just slats of wood going across, and then they grow a vine over it to look pretty.

I have a square green coolaroo.
I tried the triangle tan Coolaroo but found out I would need to many and to many post.
The reflection of the tan one made my water look dirty.

Yes, it is just a water level. ----- you hide the wood and lattice under your rocks around the pond. It really is a self made canopy but it is just for the fish (not for me too). Plus, it give another area to place plants. I am just not a fan of the look of the sail look.

That blue sail sure looks beautiful over the pond I have to admit....What do you use as anchor points to keep it so taut?

I googled pergola's shading ponds and there was a big selection to look at.
We have the opposite problem actually...because of the huge oaks we get a limited amount of sun in the summer.

We have a Pergola on our deck with a type of green house
screening. It works well for blocking out the sun, but it still lets in the light.

cool deck and pergola 99srxman

To be honest I don't like them at all. I know they are definately functional, but I just don't like the idea of a sail hanging over the pond. I do have an idea for something if I need one. http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/Squidhead_67/V163-HardwoodPrivacyScreen-1.jpg

Where the purple lines are would be 4X4 posts and headers. The posts would not be solid, but hollow covering a pipe. The pipe would slide into a just slightly larger pipe cemented into the ground, like PVC slides into the sockets of the fittings. I would have the Trellis/screen hinged at the bottom and have pullies and cable at the top so I could lower it all the way over the pond if need be. I would put slide bolts or window locks at the top to hold it in place on windy days when I don't have them down.

But, until that ever happens if I need instant shade, I bought an "instant shade" canopy to use to work under when it's really hot and the sun is full blast. It lowers to about 3' off the ground.

OR

I even thought of using the material to make like a roller shade. I'd just put it on when I wasn't outside. I only get sun from 9AM - 3PM, then it's shaded. When the smaller trees get bigger. It will probably only get partial sun. But I have at least a good 5 years until then, at least.

squidhead, I need one of these things you've pictured to hide my equipment on the left side of the pond. When are you coming over to build me one?

Well building one of these is a hell of alot easier then building a pond. I still didn't finish the ones around my AC units. The bottom part is done, but I want to do the latice on the top or even iron trellis with birds or something in the middle.

They really didn't take much time, the only regret was using 5/8" decking. They sell those dog ear fence boards for about $1 each and there lighter. I think I made each panel in about 30 minutes? I work cheap and am fueled by Guinness, only I wont be driving afterward. Wish they had taxi's around here.

It is green.
I used well casing for poles. I have several eye bolts on each pole and hook chains and turn buckles to tighten . It takes my wife and I about 109 minutes to put it up or take it down. I bought it on eBay.
