Now I have to save up for a sieve. I had planned to buy the sieve and spend what was left on the collectibles but dang it, I got carried away! Sure am going to enjoy them though!!:giggle:

You need to get your priorities straight!! lol!
I am a fine one to talk about priorities. It took me 6 years to finish building my house because I was too busy building koi ponds in the back yard!

Lilylady, all the professionals cook on gas, don't they? I hate electric. Gas is where it's at. Instant on and off. More control. Plus the most important thing about a gas stove is that you can toast marshmallows on it!!!
Yes, Peace, a little over $2k on Star Trek stuff. I'm so ashamed. I didn't realize as I was pointing and clicking how much stuff it would amount to. I converted my fish database to use for the Star Trek stuff but that still didn't give a good visual until it actually started arriving and then it got scary.
My sons are laughing their *sses off as well as my daughters-in-law when I took them up to the spare room to show them my stash. Even my granddaughters just stood there speechless. And, sadly, it's not even all here yet.
Wow. Just... Wow. I have no response for that.
Peppy

Wow. Just... Wow. I have no response for that.
But there's more to it than just hoarding the stuff, lol. A friend of mine bought a crap-load of those painted ponies a few years ago, waited a few years, and then started selling them.
I've bought fairies that tripled in price the next year but I don't want to sell those because, well, I bought them because I liked them and still like them.
I thought I might try my luck with the Star Trek stuff since I'm a fan anyway and see what happens. I split the purchases between limited editions and not-limited since my one son says often it's the regular toys that end up being valuable since people save and take good care of the limited editions while the toys are often opened and used and discarded.
So I wait...
I can tell you one thing, nobody, but nobody, can do William Shatner. If someone ever makes a believable Captain Kirk, well, there goes my next bonus...
I'd do a great Kirk. Just saying.

You know what's funny, Addy? I don't particularly like sci fi. I don't watch much sci fi at all. I hate the new Star Treks like TNG and all those. That tea drinking whimpy Picard is a sad substitute for the handsome and manly Kirk. I just can't get into any of the new series. I only like the old Star Treks, the old movies with the original cast, and the new remake of the old Star Trek with the new young cast.
My youngest son got me The Wrath of Kahn DVD and the new Star Trek DVD last year.
I'm not really a trekker either. Don't know the star dates or any of that minutae, just love love love it and always will.

peppy, my old auntie collected those avon collectable purfume/aftershave bottles. they were going to be worth a fortune one day.....
You know, my wife watches this show about people who hoard things, I guess so they'll be worth something someday might be one of their reasons. The show drives me nuts, I can't understand... Why not just get a CD or open a mutual fund? They'll be worth something a lot more dependably, and eat up a lot less space. Just saying. :giggle:

I dad collects antiques, specializing in clocks. Over the years, he has sort of slowly upgraded to a musuem quality collection. They are gorgeous.....but a whole wall full of them.....and I mean EVERY wall....is a bit much. I guess it sort of makes him a high-end horder. His collection really is worth much more then he paid for them, and he really loves looking at them so I get where Peppy is coming from. The clocks made my dad happy. Peppys' star trek stuff makes her happy (even though I don't really get it....lol). My christmas tree ornament collection makes me happy. I think collecting things that we love is a fun thing to do. So as long as we are not relying on our collections to get us through our retirement years, keep on doing what you enjoy. Lord knows these darn fish are about as worthless as you can get but we seem to keep collecting them! lol!

I don't collect anything. But, I do have a theme in every room. The Coke/Pepsi dining room was pretty pricey. I do enjoy looking at the things I've bought. And people come over and say .... OMG I remember having one of those ... lol My son was here for Christmas and asked if he could have his old record player back .. I think people who collect things and enjoy them is different than people who hoard things and never see them after they bought them. My hubby's Dad is like that. 4 garages full of nothing but junk. You can't even walk through them let alone get a car in there. But, he refuses to get rid of anything.

right...horders don't collect anything specific....they collect and save EVERYTHING!! There's a big difference between collecting and hording. I enjoy the search! I love browsing Ebay, flea markets, antique shops, etc, looking for things to add to my collection. And since it's christmas stuff, I only get to enjoy it for 5 weeks or so, once a year. I collect antique pottery too. Some of it has gone way up in value, some of it I get just because I like it. But I sure do enjoy the hunt!

You know, Cindy, I was really just messing with poor Peppy. Really, Star Trek stuff might be pretty cool. This thread took off, didn't it?
I routinely go through closets looking for donation material because I don't like to keep a bunch of stuff but collecting is different. Most of the fairies are displayed in a beautiful oak display cabinet hubby bought me. All their boxes are folded neatly and stored away. If I ever get tired of looking at them, most are limited editions so I don't see any problem selling them. They're so beautiful and the detail is amazing. One I paid $39 for and bought two of them and last year they were selling for $300.
I agree about the CDs but won't put money where there's any possibility of losing it. While others lost a lot in the economic meltdown, I didn't lose a penny and ended up ahead in the long run. I'm a turtle investor I guess you could say. Slow but steady.
I have a database for the Star Trek stuff to track what I paid and periodically update what each is selling for. I'll know when the price is right to profit.
Already some of the stuff is unavailable or increased in price so I think I might end up doing okay. One item I paid $43 for is now selling for $120 to $250. Isn't that crazy?
Last year my bonus went to jewelry but this year I bought a friend the new John Lennon doll because she's a huge Beatles fan and collects everything Beatles. I couldn't believe what a great piece of art this doll was and wanted one for myself but I'm not a Beatles fan. I thought, gee, what AM I a fan of? Star Trek! So I started browsing and was ecstatic to see these adorable Star Trek figurines. Then I remembered a friend buying all those painted ponies and holding them and then selling them and ... well ... off I went!
So this will be an experience. I'll let you all know how I make out in the end.

Will, I have a medium house, 2125 sq ft, but no basement and no attic storage and a garage full of pond crap and a monster truck. I let my husband get away with no basement because I was just happy to have a brand new house but I've been complaining ever since.
I've been thinking lately about laying a floor in the attic to store stuff up there. It's just that dang loose insulation. Man, I hate that stuff. The lazy man's insulation.
Pantries are great. I made sure to include a pantry in my house design and I just love love love it. I think it's nostalgic too because my best friend had one growing up and her mother used to send us in there to get stuff and, well, those were good times back then. We were truly blessed.

See the one here I paid too much for and now it's down (red arrow upper right corner of picture). Ouch! Thems the breaks. That's $9.51 out the window, lol.
Hopefully at some point that will change. Who knows. At least unlike the stock market I'll still have something to look at if it the bottom falls out of Star Trek collectibles.

01-02-2011, 10:35 PM
We all do what we know.
I learned GW Basic years ago to do payroll for our business--on a Commodore 64. No hard drive. Only Ram. If someone tripped over the cord or the power went out, I had to type the whole payroll program into the computer again. No printer, had to remember the program or think it out again from scratch. That was a great teacher.
When my son went to computer school, I'd grab his VBA book soon as his foot was in the door at night. Got double my money's worth for his tuition. I was ahead of him on every chapter and he was the one asking me questions.
I have to track things for our business that QuickBooks can't handle, so VBA is put to good use. I have a 99% paperless office with receipts a mouseclick away. So it makes sense to do that personally too. Not all receipts, but anything I might want to look at in the future. Like all my fish, my pond equipment, fairies, etc. and now the Star Trek stuff.
The benefits are:
a) knowing a good deal to buy compared to what I paid and the price history
b) knowing when to sell or when not to sell
c) grouping items to know what's needed to complete a collection
The whole thing's an experiment but at least if the bottom falls out, I'll still have something to look at.
I always use the lowest price I can find for the current price. No use deluding myself.
If you decide to start a collection of something (for instance, hubby collects guns, certain old cars and I started a die cast collection for him a few years ago) make it something you love but here's the thing, there is always someone who doesn't know what they have and that's what you look for.
I paid ridiculous low prices for a few things. Just one example of many: a guy was selling this one item for $12.50 (by mistake I guess) and I grabbed it. He then raised his price after finding out what he had. $12.50 for an item that sells for a minimum of $79. That's the kind of thing you need to look for.
I'm no expert, just using common sense and a wish and a prayer! lol
Luvmypond
01-02-2011, 11:27 PM
I should of kept track of a lot of things. My hubby has a collection of die cast cars. Mostly Corvettes. Never kept track of the price of those either. I always think if I don't keep track of the price of things, than I wouldn't freak out at the total cost of a certain hobby.

If I could I would make ours a shower bath like my father in laws in england. a drain in the floor and the entire bathroom is tiled to th ceiling, no tub, the shower is separated from the toilet and sink just by a curtain, you could rinse the whole room down if you had a mind to. great set up for a wheelchair which my M-I-L was needing when they did the bathroom that way.
I've got two bathrooms here that need gutting. The last rooms to be redone. I'd love to put claw foot tubs in both, but what I've found so far is prohibitively expensive. Prohibitively for me, anyway.
Stayed at the Duvall Hotel in Jacksonville last summer for a week, they had an awesome retro redecoration a couple of years ago, and their bathrooms were set up like that. Pretty cool. The bathrooms were closed off from the room itself by only these waterproof sliding glass walls, pretty neat, but made you feel funny on the toilet, even though it was textured glass.

We only have one bathroom. That was the first room to be gutted when we bought the house. It is done in mostly wood. Bead board half way up the walls and on the ceiling. It has the cast iron tub with no shower. We put in one of those free standing showers. My house is old, so the remodel took it back to looking old. I love it.

LOVE the mirrors, Meg! Aren't antique auctions just the best??? Bathrooms can be REALLY expensive to do! Most of you know I built my house myself. It's a two-bedroom house, but we only got one bedroom and bath done in order to move in. The master bed and bath are framed up and wired, but that's it. That bath will be fun! That will be a project I might start trying to tackle in the spring. I'd really really love to have a second bathroom in this house!!

I never saw a jointed one....but I found this. http://cgi.ebay.com/OOAK-Fantasy-White-Skin-Super-Tiny-Ball-Jointed-Doll-/200560770848?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb25a7f20 Kind of creepy looking and not really high end, but still....LOTS better than I could do! I bet it is really fragile.
MUCH better!! http://cgi.ebay.com/OOAK-FAIRY-BALL-JOINTED-art-doll-CDLITE-/330514770289?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf4372971

the second one Cindy, yes, that was the one I saw also. but it says it is made of polymer clay but the creepy one says resin and strung inside with bands, maybe the other has a clay sculped head? the bodies look to be made the same :dunno:

Hey Meg, with friends like that...you know the rest, LOL.:P::lol:
I know my weaknesses. No looking at fairies for me. Period.:nope:
One of my 3 son's favorite sayings is: if you don't buy it, you can't eat it.
Extrapolating from that: if you don't see it, you can't buy it!:smiley-happy:

That depends on your definition of the word need. Spiritually and emotionally, I need the fairies. And the Star Trek stuff.

ahhh I'm so jealous !!!! I like gas a lot better than electric. Lucky you
The higher end homes I go into have gas 8 burner cooktops and seperate electric double ovens, some with warming drawers. Either Wolfe, Viking, Five Star, or Thermador
Gas is better for cooktops, as it provides quick, even heat that electric just can't do. Conversly the opposite is true for ovens. Gas ovens are known for longer cooking, drier foods and uneven baking. Electic ovens are not.
