I have cleaned out my plant bog and divided them up, potting everything in 4" pots. None of the plants offered for sale are tissue cultured plants, they are all divisions from mature blooming plants. Many of these divisions are mature enough to bloom this spring. They are dormant now and will be shipped bare root with foliage removed. I normally cut back all of the foliage in late winter anyway so there are no frost damaged pitchers in the bog for the new year.
Pitcher plants are very interesting. In the spring, they put out their blooms first, before the new pitchers. This is to ensure the insects have a change to pollinate the plants without being eaten by the pitchers! Isn't nature amazing!
Carnivorous plants like poor soil and acidic water. I use a 50/50 mix of peat and sand. My well water is very acidic, but if your tap water not acidic then give your pitcher plant rain water or distilled water. These plants are perfectly winter hardy in most areas of the country. Some are more hardy than others though, so google them for hardiness if you have any questions.
drosera filiformis are a very hardy form of sundew. They have tentacles that trap and digest small insects. They bloom, although the bloom is not very significant. They do freely seed in the bed so you will have more of them in a couple of years. They will form nice large colonies.
The sarracenia are $5 each. The sundews and venus fly traps are $3 each. Priority mail shipping will be a minimum of $5.20 but will be no more than $14.95 (those are flat rate boxes.....I'll use the smallest possible to save money).
