Greetings all. I have a small question, and need everyones input and ideas. A few months back I was laid off, I am a residential & commercial electrician, been doing so about 12 years. I have been thinking of ways to bring in some sort of additional money and the idea was thrown up, why not start a small business running/wiring electric to peoples ponds. I thought why the heck havent i thought of this before. I havent heard of ANY people withine the local vicinity that do this, yes most landscaping companies that do ponds do there own electrical work, but I honestly think this could work. No it most likely wouldnt be a full time job, but it would bring in a little extra here and there. Now the big question is what would I name the business/company? My last name is Johnson. I thought about something like Johnsons Pond Wiring or Pond Service, but if possible, id like something with a little more ZING! something a little more catchy that people will remember. and prefferably something short. at least shorter then "Johnsons Pond Wiring".

I would be doing all electrical services; trenching, laying pipe(if needed), photoeyes, motion detectors, GFIs, Low voltage lighting, switches, boxes, and panel wiring (including breakers).

so, any ideas?

thanks to all in advance

Brit J.

I wouldn't use a name that limited my scope to just ponds. I can't come up with a name just yet but I would recommend advertising in a monthly cooperative booklet such as the "Coupon Mint". Anyone would know that a residential electrician is qualified to do outside wiring. You certainly should mention the pond aspect in your advertisement.

I agree with Ponderer, I would not limit it to just ponds. You will starve! LOL!

true. maybe ill look into "johnsons electric" or "johnsons electrical service" then on business cards, or website, whatever i do ill put what we/I do, and pond wiring/low voltage landscape wiring will be there.

hmm, i really like that idea, and its smart, thanks. i still think i wanna come up with something more catchy then johnsons electric.... there are some cool company names out here. Hazzard electric (which is ironically the owners last name), then theres "the wire nut". i like those kinda names but not good with word play.

A donut shop can use a cute name an electrical service needs a name that's all business, Johnson's Electric would be such a name. The wording (like licensed, bonded, insured & competitive rates) in your well planned advertisement is what's going to bring in the work.

I've got to agree with Ponderer, a certified electrician should have a no nonsense name, because people in search of these services aren't looking for a smartass, but for a licensed, bonded, and insured professional. Someone who will not waste their time with B.S., but get right down to business in a quick and efficient, professional manner. No offense to you, I just think that's what they're after.

Any humor would come (maybe) in your ad. I see a woman watching Unsolved Mysteries when, suddenly, the room goes black, right as the narrator is about to reveal the mystery. She yells "Joe, what have you done NOW?", as the view changes to a befuddled husband ("Joe") with hair on end holding two wires outside. Narrator: "should have called the electric Professionals at JOHNSON'S ELECTRIC"

Now, that may be a little too advanced for small business advertising, but you can capitalize on the average wife's doubts as to her husband's electrical wiring proficiency. Market your company as a professional tradesman to women, in ponds I think that might be your best avenue of attack.

Maybe a radio ad: "Ladies, before your husband wires your pond and blacks out the neighborhood, call JOHNSON'S ELECTRIC. We'll KEEP the lights on for you!" (Yes, I stole that from Motel 6, which makes it better)

Just my thoughts, use 'em if you like 'em, discard 'em if you don't.

Even better:

Average Johnson's

We may be average in some respects
But we are outstanding electricians

Yeah, I know the first answer I gave was respectable and a great answer, but I think "Average Johnson's" would actually get you noticed more. The only bad publicity is no publicity. After a while, your phone would ring like crazy.

Damn, I should be in advertising.

It's advertising brilliance. All publicity is good publicity, it gets your business name out there. That ad connotes honesty and humility.

Average Johnson's shows a sense of humor and humility, a self deprecating admission that no one else would admit to. Kind of reminiscent of Eminem, one of my favorite tongue in cheek artists. Sure, the name is a bait-and-switch technique, but it gets people to wondering. Especially curious would be women (thirty-something women and beyond, who are less interested in raw sex appeal and more interested in stability) and gay men, who are, in my experience, more interested in ponding at a younger age than straight men. Lisa, I'm sure you have a comment there, that's OK, I can handle it.

Just average. Nobody will advertise themselves as "average", so I think the name will stand out. Be easy to find in the phone book too, and the name will certainly not be forgotten.
