guess i do not fully understand what you are looking for for an answer but here goes just rambling

check out these 2 threads by Mike pretty much sums up what SHOULD be done here in midwest

    http://www.thepondforum.com/showthre...Indoor-Koi-Spa

    http://www.thepondforum.com/showthre...ay-Coming-Soon

basically alot of people will not agree with building something indoors but next option is like Will doing with his "igloo"
    http://www.thepondforum.com/showthre...e-construction

sure a koi may survive through the winter but will it thrive? esp come summer

so great care must be taken to keep water warmer then just out in open.
    can heat pond
    lay insulation on top
    do a greenhouse over it
    or bring indoors
unless midwest starts getting some rain or alot of snow this winter my prdiction is these shallow 2 ft water gardens with koi are going to freeze awfully solid.
samething happen some years back.ground was dry and no snow cover so the cold temps went deep into ground and made ponds freeze solid at 2 feet deep.cause there was no moisture to make a frost barrier so cold temps kept gpoing deeper(also watch water mains break in town also in midwest)
so when this happen some years back my outdoor pond was only 3 feet deep with 25+ inches of ice so you can guess was HARD on the koi lost a few few came up to surface and i grabbed and brought in house in cattle tank(still can not believe i saved a few this way as they were pretty much frozen ended up placing in sink with ice and cold water with fish tank air bubbler to warm water slowly)
so that was the last winter they stayed out for me
then next ??? 4 years or so they came down in basement in 8ft. tanks with filtration from outside
then what now coming on 8 years??? ago i ended up getting bloodclots and doc said chance i was not coming out of hospital.well i did then built the indoor pond room either i was going to let my life insurance pay for room or i keep working rest of my life(guess i am working rest of my life)

so anyway only koi i had was inside none every went outside again.well had the "waste" pond and always see Trot mud pond harvest and Koi acres pond harvest and wonder if a few koi would work in waste pond.did alright but think i can do better so this expansion.

what basiacally will happen(well did this year) is i will have the bigger koi stay inside and use this pond to grow a few koi up.in fall Like Troy mud pond harvest i will lower water and bring them inside.they first will go to 8ft. tank to watch and be ready to treat as needed and soon as can be go into main pond.guess my Qt is short as i am not worrying so much about KHV as Koi Acres test for it and has strict rules as a dealer and these fish spend the summer out there in warm water so if something like khv should have been noticed LONG before harvest.
also the indoor pond water gets baskwashed into this pond hence the term"waste" pond so really any kind of buggy problem indoors would be going into outdoor pond anyway.part of what i like indoors as not been issues at all or even heron or rain down pour problems.

so i know long explanation and more info then needed but just laid it all out there for surviving midwest winters.Had 18 this morning and in past we will get below 0 for temps and then windchill can be -20 or worse esp out here in country.

and people ask how we live. well 1 i am ready to get out of here but really i would rather have zero or minus then 32 and wind.wind can just go right through clothing and take breathe away.heck after hitting zero it really just does not feel any colder cause it is cold.

least if i go out in winter i do not have to worry about bugs biting.
