    how cold before freeze solid

I what to let my pump and waterfall go as long as possible before removing the pump for the winter.
How cold do the nights need to be before the pond will get totally covered with ice and I cant get to my pump?
my pond is 220 gal and 24" deep.

This is a very difficult question to answer since more variables than just night time air temperature is involved in determining if the water will freeze. There are several conditions that will allow water to freeze when air temperature is well above 32 F or 0 C. If you want to find out more Google "Black body radiation" and "Wind Chill".

The waterfall will actually lower water temps as it offers circulated exposure to air temps.

In my small pond I will run a submerged pump close to the surface just to keep the ice open.
May large pond I turn off all pumps and move my aerator to within 18" of the water surface as to not stir up the warmer water on the bottom.

I stop feeding completely when water temps hit 50 degrees.
